How do I get great photo lighting at home?

I am trying to take better modeling photos at home and need to improve the lighting? How can I do this so its affordable? Also any tricks for taking better modeling photos?

Cheapest solution: use good window light and a reflector to ‘fill in’ the shadow side. A reflector can be a bought one (a good 5 in 1 reflector costs less than £10 on eBay), or you can just use a large sheet of white card, or a large white bed sheet!!

Slightly more expensive: an off camera flash (or two) & something to trigger them with (altogether less than £100 on eBay). Use of a sheet diffuser, diffusion panel (available in the 5 in 1 reflector mentioned above) to soften the light. Possibly a small softbox or umbrella for hotshoe flashes.

Expensive: couple of studio stobes, light stands, large umbrellas, softboxes, grids etc etc.

Avoid photographing under non-daylight balanced light(tungsten, fluorescent) as you may have problems correcting for white balance.
