Led lighting vs conventional and CFL Light Bulbs

The world of interior lighting is changing with led lighting looking set to become the lighting choice of the future.  However many people have been slow to pick up on the many benefits that led lights and light bulbs have over conventional light bulbs and the new low energy light bulbs that have been introduced.
  One thing that puts people off is the cost as led lights are at first glance more expensive than normal energy saving light bulbs.  This does not tell the whole story though as the lifespan of most led lamps on sale today is a massive 50,000 times that of a regular incandescent light bulb.  Yes you did read that right a led lamp will last 50,000 times longer.  So not only do you get a longer lifespan with led lamps they are also far cheaper to run as well.  Led light bulbs are 4 times cheaper to run than the latest energy saving light bulbs and more than 20 times cheaper to run than conventional incandescent light bulbs.
  There are pros and cons to everything and the lighting in your home is no different.  As conventional filament lighting is being phased out around the world you will shortly be faced with making a choice between led lighting and energy saving light bulbs.  That is unless you buy a lifetimes supply of the old fashioned light bulbs before they go out of stock.
  On the plus side for CFL low energy light bulbs is that they are fairly cheap to purchase, are widely available and the technology associated with them is constantly improving.  There are however many downsides to them.  Many people think that they look ugly and oversized and won’t fit in smaller lamp fittings as well as poking out of the end of lampshades.  Also many people don’t like the tone and quality of light that they give off complaining of eye strain and headaches caused by flickering.  Although CFL bulbs are marketed as low energy they are by no means environmentally friendly.  They contain mercury vapour which is a highly toxic and dangerous substance and the possibility of millions of CFL light bulbs being dumped in landfills each year and polluting the environment is very real.  CFL light bulbs are now classified as hazardous waste in the UK.
  The main reason for switching to led lighting is their cost effectiveness and they are becoming cheaper all the time.  The cost of lighting is dependent on what it costs to run the lights and not what it costs to buy them.  Led lights and lamps can be run at a fraction of the cost of conventional bulbs and they will also last a whole lot longer too.  The reason for this is that they use electricity far more efficiently.  Old fashioned light bulbs waste 90% of the electricity they use giving out heat, led lights give out no heat and can be safely handled even when switched on.  Unlike CFL light bulbs led lamps do not suffer from poor start times, ungainly sizes and they cause no threat to the environment.
  The future is bright for led lighting (pardon the pun) as the lighting industry has all but stopped research into CFL bulbs and is now firmly committed to led lighting being the lighting of the future.

Choosing Bathroom Lights For Safety And Style

If you want to look your best then you’ll probably spend a fair bit of time in the bathroom, but unless you have decent bathroom lighting you may not be seeing yourself in the best light. Literally. Designer bathroom lights can look fabulous, and add a very great deal to the overall look and feel of the bathroom, but when it comes to choosing the right lights for your bathroom it’s important to think about two things.

The first thing to consider is the look of the light itself. This may be a wall light, bathroom mirror light or Ceiling Light, and each of these types offers a whole variety of choice. If you have a bathroom with chrome based fittings, such as chrome taps, chrome towel rails and chrome handles on bathroom cupboards then it’s probably a good idea to consider opting for bathroom lights with a chrome finish. Nickel Plated lighting offers a beautifully warm look, but it’s generally best to complement chrome with chrome rather than mix nickel and chrome together.

Another aspect to consider as far as the look of the bathroom lighting is concerned is the type of shade you use. Frosted glass offers a diffused light, which is both soft and very much easier to work with if you happen to be taking advantage of a little privacy and a mirror to carry out your ablutions and pampering. Spot lighting such as that offered from recessed ceiling lights, usually LED or halogen, can look incredibly stylish, and helps focus more light where you need it. But for lighting near bathroom mirrors  a soft, diffused effect can work extremely well, giving you a more even light.

But the second aspect to consider when choosing your bathroom lights is safety. Clearly a bathroom is a wet area, and electricity and water are not the best of companions. Today however there’s a very easy system in use which helps you to quickly and easily identify the type of light that’s suitable for each area of your bathroom. So, for example, zone 1 is the wettest location, being around the bath and shower. Zone 2 is slightly less soaking, being just outside the immediate bath, shower and basin areas, and zone 3 is the furthest away from these sources of water. So if you’re looking for designer bathroom lighting to create a well lit bath or shower area, look for zone 1 lighting, and for bathroom mirror lights and designer bathroom wall lights, bear in mind you’ll need either zone 2 or 3.
