Recessed Ceiling Lights are used throughout the UK as a reliable source of general light in homes and commercial spaces. Recessed ceiling lights are available in different styles and have a number of functions.
While sometimes called recessed spotlight or recessed spot the correct term is recessed downlight and are either fixed, adjustable or scoop in their design. Fixed downlights provide a general light straight down, adjustable lights are really tilt downlights and there is around 15 degrees of adjustment to allow objects or walls to be washed with light. Scoop downlights have a greater adjustment and are used to light pictures and artwork on the wall.

Recessed downlights can use a number of different lamp types including mains GU10 lamps, 12v GY5,3 GX53 and AR111 together with PAR 20, Par 30, R63 and R80 lamps. Modern recessed spotlights are now more robustly built with quality material including aluminium and zintec which dissipate heat and give long life. Changing the lamps is easier with most fittings offering the ability to change the lamp without tools making maintenance easier for the homeowner.
Fire protection is now considered more and more when using recessed downlights and as a result fire-rated downlights and fire hoods are available for downlights to make good any breaks in fire compartments. These downlights and fire hoods offer protection for up to 90 minutes often exceeding the fire safety offered by the plasterboard in which they are fixed.
Most recessed downlights are dimmable with the exception of compact fluorescent lamps. Importantly when dimming 12v spots you should use the value of the transformer when calculating the size of the dimmer unit required. Six recessed spots with 50w lamps will have six 60va transformers so the dimmer should be able to operate a load of 360 watts. Electronic transformers are dimmable and usually guaranteed for five or more years.
Cutting holes for your recessed lighting is often made easier with a dedicated hole cutter and pad saw can be used by this process is more difficult and time consuming. Recessed lighting can be installed in lathe and plaster ceilings however a fixture with deeper lugs is often required to take into account the thicker construction of the ceiling. Equally ceilings made from two layers of plasterboard also need a fixture with deeper spring fixing clips.
When using recessed lights in a living room, hotel lobby or bar you should consider using a Light Fixture that gives less glare. Low glare lighting is often achieved by positioning the lamp further back in the fitting thereby spill light does not escape for the light fixture and only useful light without glare is directed out of the light fixture. Low glare downlight can also use pin holes bezels or slots to achieve the same effect.
With any recessed spot the quality of the light provided is determined by the lamp. Using a low quality lamp will give poor results and a colour rendering that provides too much yellow, red blue or green light. Good quality lamps last longer, give a good colour and control the beam angle more effectively.
